Did you know that... 70 years ago today Valencia Football Club won its first League Title

A day, just like today, but 70 years ago, a golden age for Valencia C.F. began in Spanish football when it won, for the first time, its first league title in its 93 years of existence, that trophy now being on display at the exhibition entitled "Science and Sport with Valencia CF" at the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum.

With two fixtures left before the end of the season (1941/1942), the team beat Español 2-1, that victory remaining forever in the memory of Valencia fans. It was a hard won championship where the team beat all its previous records by scoring 85 goals in 26 games with the legendary “electric attack” of Epi, Amadeo, Mundo, Asensi and Gorostiza, and a defence of Eizaguirre, Álvaro, Juan Ramón, Bertolí, Iturraspe, Lelé, that its rivals found very difficult to penetrate.

It was not the first trophy for the club –in 1941 it won the Generalísimo Cup-, but it was the one that began a series of triumphs for the club, presided over at that time by Luis Casanova, including the league Championships of 1943/44 and 1946/47, as well as another Cup in 1949 before the decade was over.

In the 1940s, the squad of Valencia C.F. was also recognised for having in its ranks one of the symbols of the club, Edmundo Suárez - "Mundo”-, who won two top-scorer trophies in that decade, so becoming one of the most prolific scorers in the history of Valencia C.F.

More than twenty years would have to pass before Valencia fans would again savour a league title victory, in 1971, the most recent being in 2002 and 2004 during the Benítez period.

At “Science and Sport with Valencia CF” visitors can also find out how new technologies are applied to sport. The exhibition, the joint work of the City of Arts and Sciences and Valencia C.F., the VCF Foundation and the Association of Valencia C.F. Footballers, and with the special collaboration of the Pablo Ornaque Collection, brings together trophies, kits, items of enormous historic value, such as the founding standard and the ball which was used in the game when Valencia F.C. was proclaimed League Champion in 1941/42, amongst others of great emotional value, such as replicas of the Bar Torino and a changing room from the 1940s, or the enormous fan of the Aldaia Valencia Supporters Club as well as many others.
