Oct 3, 2007

Tomorrow, Thursday 4th October, is the fiftieth anniversary of the date when the Soviet Union put, for the first time in history, an unmanned artificial satellite, the Sputnik, into orbit around the earth. For this reason, the City of Arts and Sciences has organised a series of activities to commemorate that event.
Tomorrow the City of Arts and Sciences celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Sputnik´s launch Throughout the day, free access will be granted to the Space Academy of the Science Museum which recreates three stages from preparing for the launch to the International Space Station. Guided by the voice and image of the Spanish astronaut Pedro Duque, visitors pass through the space lab, the launch elevator and shuttle that provide access to the space flight simulator.

Furthermore, in the Side Street of the Museum and Hemisfèric Hall, videos will be projected on the launch of the Sputnik, the aim of which was to provide researchers with information on the temperature and characteristics of the highest layers of the atmosphere. Meanwhile, in the canteen of the Umbracle, a Children’s Astronomy session will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 a.m.

Finally, at 7.30 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Hall of the Museum, Amelia Ortiz, from the Astronomic Observatory of the University of Valencia, will be giving a lecture in which she will explain the significance of the launch of this satellite, which encouraged many other countries to develop research related with science and space technology, leading to projects of an even greater scope.
