Jorge Vela: "We are putting on a quality presentation for the general public to celebrate this time of year in the City of Arts and Sciences"

Dec 5, 2007

The general director of the City of Arts and Sciences, Jorge Vela, accompanied by the director of the Science Museum, Manuel Toharia, and the Director of the Oceanographic Park, Pablo Areitio, today presented the special programme that the educational centre has prepared for the Christmas festive season.
Jorge Vela: Jorge Vela stated that “this means complementing what is usually on offer in the complex with some special contents to celebrate this season with our visitors through activities aimed at all kinds of people, from the parents and grandparents themselves to the smallest children and teenagers.”

The City of Arts and Sciences has programmed a series of special activities for the Christmas season. This includes a wide range of leisure ideas in which special attention has been placed on activities related to the environment and responsible consumerism. There are, for example, workshops, theatre, walkways, or story telling. In addition, there are slopes for snowboarding and sledges, an area dedicated to Formula 1, the presentation of Laura Gallego’s latest book with the author in person, a party based on the famous character Tintin, and the Oceanographic Park will be run along the theme of the Simpsons’ famous hometown, Springfield.

Formula 1 and snowboard slope

The area dedicated to Formula 1 will be in the Arquerías (Arches) Hall of the Science Museum from 10th December to the coming 6th January. The general director pointed out that this is a travelling activity that the Generalitat (Valencian Regional Government) set in motion “in order to explain the secrets of Formula 1” which will be visiting us next August to hold the European Grand Prix. This area, which will be free to enter, will include activities, games and simulators related to the sport.

Furthermore, there will be two slopes on the Paseo Sur (Southern Promenade) from Saturday 15th December until Sunday 6th January. One will be to try snowboarding and the other for sliding on sledges with monitors and equipment, to become initiated in these activities.

Another of the proposals is the presentation of Laura Gallego’s latest book on Saturday 15th. The Valencian writer will be chatting with her followers in the Museum’s Auditorium and signing copies of her latest work. In addition, the Museum’s Calle Mayor (Main Street) will house different activities on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th, such as a party based on the famous character Tintin, a sudoku marathon and a Parkour demonstration.

Environmental workshops

Manuel Toharia stated that in the Museum “we follow a leit motiv of environmental topics. Following the celebration of the IPCC’s full meeting and this year’s setting in motion of a cycle of activities dedicated to climate change, we have intended to dedicate some of the activities and workshops to environmental awareness.” He also reminded us that in the Hemisfèric’s programme a new system of digital projections has been introduced.

Toharia mentioned that during the weekend of 15th and 16th December the “Sustainable” walkway will be held in the Museum’s Calle Mayor. Here, with the theme of renewable energies, we will see the children’s theatre play “The Tree”, and interactive science workshops on astronomy, DNA, balance and Foucault’s pendulum, among others. Moreover, he added that the Science Museum will shortly hold a new exhibition dedicated to the relation between espionage and science, as well as the open day “Social Communication and climate risks” to be held next 13th December.

The Oceanographic Park’s director, Pablo Areitio, explained that during 15th and 16th December the Oceanographic Park will turn into Springfield, where the famous Simpson family live. There will be different marquees and inflatable castles around the park that will represent Springfield’s School, Police Station, and Library, as well as Mr. Burns’ mansion, Bart’s gang and Moe’s Bar.

In these places the little ones in particular will be able to participate in different workshops for drawing, make-up, badges, balloons with the faces of the characters, catapults, diabolos, with popcorn and soft drinks, and workshops for pets. Among other things they can have photos taken in the Simpsons’ Hall or enjoy the stories and books from the series. The characters from the famous series will be visiting the marquees to say hello to the visitors.
