The exhibition brings together for the first time the portraits of Dr. Simarro and other works of art of scientific interest
THE SCIENCE MUSEUM EXHIBITS THE SCIENCE ORIENTATED WORKS OF SOROLLA Coinciding with its 10th anniversary, the Príncipe Felipe Science Museum is hosting the exhibition “Sorolla and Science”, which shows the scientific dimension of this Valencian painter. This new exhibition, undertaken in collaboration with the Sorolla Museum, the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and the Valencia Fine Arts Museum, brings together for the first time the portraits of Dr. Simarro and other works of art of scientific interest.

“Sorolla and Science” includes the oil paintings representing Dr. Simarro: “Dr. Simarro in his laboratory”; “Dr. Simarro” and “An investigation”, a tribute to the positive aspects of science that Simarro surrounded by his disciples represents, and is rounded off with several of Sorolla’s watercolours and charcoal drawings, the portraits of two scientists of the time, Jaime González Castellano and Amalio Gimeno Camañas, and various items from Dr. Simarro legacy.

The Valencian Luis Simarro, doctor and friend of the Sorolla family was one of the leading personalities in medical advances of his era and is known for having taught Santiago Ramón y Cajal various staining techniques that allowed Cajal to make progress in his research into the nervous system. Dr. Simarro was the first full professor of Psychology and so is regarded among Spanish psychologists as the father figure of that subject.

This exhibition can be seen until 20th February and is located on the second floor of the Science Museum in the Legacy of Science area, an area devoted to the Nobel Prize winners Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Severo Ochoa and Jean Dausset.
