The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències announces a new edition of the ‘Crystallisation competition in the School'

The Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències has announced a new edition of the 'Crystallisation competition in the school' for secondary school students in years 10 and 11, and students in years 12 and 13 of higher secondary education. The competition is organised as a scientific congress. The presentation of the finalists' works will be held on 7 May 2021 on Calle Mayor of the Museu de les Ciències.

This competition is organised by the Specialised Group for Crystallography and Crystal Growth (GE3C) of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) and the Spanish Royal Physics Society (RSEF), and is developed in collaboration with Jaume I University (UJI) and the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències.

Entries are accepted up to 4 February 2021, and there is also an online mode available this year to make it easier for schools to take part, and will be set up in case the in-person stage is not possible.

As regards the teaching staff, the organisation offers the “Crystallisation as a teaching resource in the classroom” training course, which provides educational tools for a more thorough preparation of the project.

The first edition of the competition was held in May 2014 for the International Year of Crystallography and stands out among the special initiatives by the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències aimed at the student group. Some of the crystal formations that resulted in winners at previous editions are one of the features in the ''20 amb tu, contigo, with you'' exhibition which celebrates the anniversary of the Museo de les Ciències.

The idea of the 'crystallisation in the school' competition is to reveal the ways of carrying out science in the stages of secondary school education through the organisation of a 'rivalrous competition'. Among the objectives of the competition are to highlight the role that crystals play at present, and to encourage the youngest students to study, analyse and gain knowledge about them.
