Children aged between 6 and 12 participating in the Oceanographic Park’s Summer School this week took part in scuba diving, discovering what it feels like to breathe underwater like true scuba divers.
The Oceanográfico of the City of the Arts and Sciences starts its summer school
On Monday 25 June the third edition of the summer school run by the Oceanográfico of the City of Arts and Sciences begins. Its activities are aimed at children aged between 6 and 12 and will be held during the months of June and July. For five days some 70 children will be immersed in the marine world accompanied by qualified group leaders, with whom they will discover new experiences in the form of games and workshops.
The Oceanographic Park introduces 15 specimens of ocean sunfish into its premises
The Oceanographic Park of the City of Arts and Sciences has received 15 specimens of ocean sunfish on its premises. This species can be seen in the Oceans tank sharing the space with sharks, rays, sawfish and large shoals of bonito.

The Príncipe Felipe Science Museum has incorporated two plays, aimed at the general public, into its programme of events. The plays, which will be showing until 15th July, are based on the world of sailing and have been created through collaboration between educators, scientists and actors.

The general director of the City of Arts and Sciences, Jorge Vela, and the general director for Sports, Enrique Sarasol, today presented the third edition of Sports Day, which will be held next Sunday, 17th June. Jellyfish, sea horses and sea dragons join the biological collection of the Oceanografico
Four aquariums devoted to jellyfish, seahorses and sea dragons make up the new installation of the Oceanográfico at the City of Arts and Sciences. This exhibition aims not only to exhibit these species, but also to transmit the conservation message, especially for seahorses that are exposed to threats from direct exploitation and accidental capture through non-selective fishing techniques and, above all, as a result of the degradation of their habitat.
The Oceanográfico to take part in a study on automatic beluga whale detection techniques in Norway
The Oceanográfico’s research team at the City of Arts and Science, in collaboration with the Norwegian Polar Institute, will be taking part, from today until 17th May, in a study on the Svalbard islands (Norway) to test automatic beluga whale detection techniques. These will enable experts to identify the presence of these cetaceans by analysing the sounds they make and so establish measures for their conservation.

The councillor for Economy, Treasury and Employment, Gerardo Camps, stated that the “challenge of the campaign “One toy, one hope” for next year lies in manufacturing one and a half million toys such that they can reach 500,000 children around the world”. Gerardo Camps made these declarations during the signing of the agreement for cooperation subscribed to this morning in the Alicante town of Ibi, with the president of the “Crecer Jugando” foundation, José Antonio Pastor, to start up the 8th edition of the “One toy, one hope” solidarity campaign that the City of Arts and Sciences has sponsored from the beginning.

The main aim of this Summer School is to encourage new attitudes among the group and learning through fun. For five days, the children will be submerged in the marine world accompanied by qualified monitors, through games and workshops.
Researchers at the Oceanográfico study the auditory sensitivity of Beluga Whales
The Oceanográfico’s research team at the City of Arts and Sciences is undertaking a scientific study, in collaboration with the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology of the United States, to measure the hearing ability of beluga whales using electro-physiological methods, a study that will enable scientists to define the sounds that these animals hear best under the water.

Doctors Erwin Neher, of the Department of Membrane Biophysics at the Max-Planck Institute in Göttingen, Germany, and Richard G.M. Morris, of the Research Centre into Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, have received the Santiago Grisolía Chair 2007 Awards, organised by the City of Arts and Sciences Foundation.

On the occasion of ‘International Book Day’, the City of Arts and Sciences celebrated today an intensive day of events with didactic workshops and the start of a reading chain or bookcrossing system throughout the city of Valencia.

Next Monday, 23 April, will be International Book Day. This event is promoted by the UNESCO with the aim of commemorating books and encouraging culture and the protection of intellectual property by means of copyright. Because of this, the City of Arts and Sciences takes part in this international event with an entire day devoted to the reading of great literary stories and to their authors.
The Oceanographic opens a new installation with jellyfish, seahorses and sea dragons
The Oceanográfico has opened a new installation, within the Temperate Zone, consisting of four aquariums devoted to jellyfish, seahorses and sea dragons. This is a new exhibition that the public will be able to visit during the Holy Week and Easter festivals, sponsored by Caja Duero through the City of Arts and Sciences Foundation.

To mark the “International Children’s Book Day”, which commemorates the anniversary of the birth of the writer Hans Christian Andersen, the City of Arts and Sciences organised a day devoted to the reading of tales and stories for children with workshops, story swapping and a reading marathon.
