The City of Arts and Sciences initiates the 'Robot Challenge' school competition


The teams will be able to register from 1st to 28th February 2010

The City of Arts and Sciences has started the “Robot Challenge” competition, an initiative that aims to encourage a scientific and technological vocation among students, and in which secondary school students or those from other training and educational courses of the region of Valencia.

This is a contest organised together with the Regional Education Department and the cooperation of the Valencia Polytechnic University, Jaume I University and the Valencia University, and has been sponsored by Omron Electronics Iberia S.A. The participants will have to build their own robots and compete, later, for being the fastest and best constructed, calibrated and programmed device. In this way the aim is the dissemination and use of new technologies by children and young people in the form of participation in an activity that is both practical and leisure-orientated.

“Robot Challenge” is divided into three categories. The first one of which is essentially is aimed at secondary schools, where the participants will have to use Lego pieces and the language of programming Robolab. The second one is focused on other training and educational courses of the region of Valencia, who will be able to use any type of material to build the robot. In both modalities of competition, the robots will have to take speed and rescue tests, whereas in the third and last category, the Special one, every team will be able to present from 1 to 10 robots at the maximum in order to finish the test, which will be exclusively of dance and which will allow to create a choreography among them.

if you are interested you can enrol in teams of no more than 2 students from 1st to 28th February 2010 on the web site of the City of Arts and Sciences . Registration must be carried out by a teacher or an adult.

The competition will be held at the Science Museum on 21st May in the form of a series of tests on all the robots presented. At the same time the CEFIRE* network is starting courses on this subject which target teachers and project tutors, the aim being that they acquire or update the necessary technological knowledge for advising students.
