ARCTIC

A large dome by way of an igloo represents the Arctic region, in which the natural living conditions of walruses and belugas in these cold latitudes have been reproduced. The building creates this atmosphere with rocky cliffs for the walruses and blocks of ice for the belugas.

The case of the belugas is a pioneering experience in Spain, as it allows us to study a marine mammal whose biology is still poorly understood. This species is also known as the ”sea canary” for having one of the most extensive acoustic repertoires of the toothed whales (dolphins, killer whales, etc) that have yet been studied. The aim of the research project of the Oceanogràfic installations is to carry out a more detailed bioacoustic study of this strikingly beautiful and charismatic animal in captivity.
